Trussville Fire & Rescue Station No. 4

The new building is 29,000 square feet and includes the Fire Department Headquarters, City Inspection Services and Station No. 4 all under one roof. It is strategically positioned on the north side of the city to provide emergency services where a lot of growth has occurred in recent history. While the building houses multiple services, the Fire Station is able to function independently to ensure efficient operation of their services and response.

The most important driver to the layout was circulation. The building is oriented on the property to optimize vehicular flow and maximize sight lines for the trucks leaving the premises. The vehicular circulation onsite is also separated to avoid any conflict with the fire fighting equipment.

The engine bay is capable of accommodating up to eight fire trucks at the same time. A series of four-fold engine bay doors was utilized to provide much quicker operation compared to a traditional rolling door. The engine bay also includes a custom vehicle exhaust system to capture and control the exhaust from the equipment in an enclosed space. All of the functionality of a fire station revolves around the engine bay. All of the spaces within the fire station have multiple ways to access the engine bay and can get to the gear room quickly. The engine bay even includes a training area for ladder and other training activities.

The administrative side of the building includes an area to display the city’s first fire truck directly outside the Training Room, which also serves as a storm shelter. The first floor is organized to allow for public and department training while also housing the city’s inspection services. The second floor above serves the fire department headquarters and allows them to have visual connection to the engine bay.

The fire station’s personnel played a big role in helping shape the organization of the building to create an efficient floor plan that serves their needs.
