As the Architect-of-Record for the New Tutwiler Residence Hall, TURNERBATSON was engaged to be part of the team involved with developing the plans for demolishing the original Tutwiler Residence Hall on July 4th.
The implosion went just as planned! The demolition team created a Fire-Ball effect on the top level to signal the start of the controlled implosion followed by a series of explosions on the lower floor levels that brought the building to the ground in 20 seconds. The event was planned by University of Alabama administration so that fans and alumnae were able to witness the implosion on campus or remotely via a web camera. The successful implosion was cheered by all in attendance.
The original Tutwiler Hall was a 13- story dorm tower built in the late 1960’s and has been home to thousands of female students over the years. The replacement facility will open this fall. It is five stories tall and will house more than 1,200 students.
TURNERBATSON has partnered with The University of Alabama on dozens of projects across campus over the past 20+ years. Some of the projects include the North Lawn Hall, Capstone College of Nursing, Judy Bonner Child Development Center, Peter Bryce Main Stabilization, Ferguson Student Center, Moody Music, Lloyd Hall, Russell Hall, and the proposed Performing Arts Academic Center.
