Grantswood Community Elementary School

Grantswood Community Elementary School is one of 17 projects included in Jefferson County Board of Education’s (JEFCOED) Capital Outlay Plan. With a growing and merging student population, the school was in need of additional space and existing renovations to provide adequate room for the increased student body.

TURNERBATSON was awarded the design services for this project, which feature an addition including an open and inviting entry into the school for students, faculty, and guests. The addition consists of 12 classrooms, a new kitchen and cafeteria, and a new administrative suite. The design eliminated eight portable classrooms and allows room for future growth.

The existing kitchen and cafeteria were renovated to create new classrooms and restrooms. The corridors were updated to create a continuous design and wayfinding between the new addition and the existing building. All existing public restrooms have been enlarged and updated.

The site is approximately 40 feet above Grantswood Road, which allowed the design team to create an approach to the school that focuses on the new entry. Both car and bus areas are separated providing efficient traffic flow and ample parking. A secure play area was placed in between both buildings that is large enough for children to safely play, while allowing faculty to easily monitor the entire area.
