The Altamont School is a premiere college preparatory school for grades 6-12 located in Birmingham, AL. With more than half of its student population competing in sports programs, the school pledged to provide its athletes a state-of-the-art training environment through an upgraded athletics facility.
Altamont hired TURNERBATSON, JohnsonKreis Construction, and Cayenne Creative to transform its gym and school logo. The new 26,000-square-foot facility expanded the school’s athletics and wellness programs through renovations to the existing gymnasium and improvements to the utilization of the existing facilities. The overall design of the building centers on improved circulation. New corridors facilitate easier access in and around the gymnasium, which will now have a more controlled entryway.
The gymnasium itself features an expanse of windows overlooking the City of Birmingham, refinished hardwood floors including the all-new Altamont Knight logo, and new automatic bleachers. Additional features include a second-floor spectator area, improved acoustics, a new sound system, and a new LED scoreboard.
The expanded athletics and wellness programs are supported by a new concession area, boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, training room, fitness and weight room, health classroom, and three coaches offices.
Patton Gym is named in honor of Ralph Patton, Altamont’s former athletic director, master coach, and great friend. Patton Gym celebrates the new Altamont Knight logo and its tradition of Truth, Knowledge, and Honor; and the commitment to the health and wellness of its students and faculty.
