TURNERBATSON was hired to design a 37,000 SF Academy for Gymnastics and Cheer as an addition to the Trussville Civic Center. The facility, sponsored and developed by the City of Trussville, allows for training for up to 1,000 gymnasts and cheerleaders each year.
As the Trussville community continues to grow and welcome young families, Parks & Recreation has been an important component of the city’s appeal. According to Mayor Buddy Choat and the Trussville Tribune, gymnastics and cheerleading programs have been the largest program in the city on a year-round basis welcoming more than 500 gymnasts. With a growing waitlist and continued popularity, the city could no longer house classes at a local basketball gym.
As one of the largest gymnastics and cheer facilities in the state of Alabama, the state-of-the art gym will provide numerous opportunities for its students. Whether students are just starting out in the preschool classes or practicing at a competitive level, the new gym provides the latest in equipment, safety, and training components.
The intentionality of the gym’s layout allows ample room for different sections dedicated to specific training areas. Its size allows the venue to host competitive sporting events or facilities for Trussville citizens to encourage visitors to come to Trussville, to create an economic impact, and to support local merchants. Interior design elements include colorful paint choices inspired by the Huskies mascot, natural and specialty lighting, multi-depth foam pits and padded walls, and playful furniture, creating an energized experience for each student.
Other amenities include locker rooms, support offices, a welcome area and front desk, break and lounge areas, private party rooms, and a spectators’ balcony located above the main gym.
The building’s exterior complements the existing Civic Center façade. A mix of specialty concrete block and the iconic Trussville stone provide a welcoming atmosphere as it blends a traditional Trussville look with a modern touch.
