TURNERBATSON was recently honored to accept the “2019 Building Birmingham Award” celebrating its design of The Sheffield Group’s new headquarters. The Birmingham Business Journal’s inaugural “Building Birmingham” ceremony commemorated construction activity in recent years, highlighting transformative projects, historic renovations and new developments around the Birmingham-metro area, including Sheffield’s state-of-the-art building located on Highway 280.
“This project had the perfect combination of a progressive and visionary client, beautiful site, collaborative contractors, and great design team,” said TURNERBATSON President Dave Reese. “I am excited that the BBJ has begun this program to honor Birmingham innovators.”
Awards were based on project impact, innovation, building, and design process. The Sheffield Group’s prized design speaks directly to the legacy of its three-generation, family-focused leadership. Since the group opened its new headquarters in 2018, the client is experiencing great success, increased employee morale and collaboration, and growth.
A notable aspect of the 40,000 square foot design is the intentional curve embracing the existing lake while maximizing views and interaction with the surrounding walking trails. Large exterior overhangs create covered patios, balconies, and outdoor plazas for dining, working, and relaxing — providing employees the opportunity to enjoy nature in a comfortable environment.
The interior design celebrates collaboration between departments and connection to the outdoors. The building is organized around a three-story lobby with a central monumental stair that encourages interaction and serves as principle means of travel. Expansive windows line offices and workspaces allowing for views of the manicured landscape. Glass walls cover the interior corridors supplying natural light throughout the building. Collaborative spaces – both exterior and interior – are located throughout the building encouraging flexible work environments.
Varying finish material pallets represent the three generations of the family business. Gray granite references the company’s founder, symbolizes permanence, and ties the building to the surrounding fountains and bridges on the corporate campus. Stained wood celebrates the current president and symbolizes stable leadership. The glazing and stainless-steel railings gesture to the youngest generation and their forward-thinking aspirations for the company.
Health and wellness have always been a top priority for the group. The new headquarters provides employees with a private fitness center and an on-site chef and dining room.
TURNERBASTON was honored to accept the award on behalf of its talented team and Sheffield employees. This recognition illustrates the wonderful relationships that the firm has developed with The Sheffield Group, JohnsonKreis Construction, and the other engineers and subcontractors that made the client’s dreams a reality.
